International Day of Persons with Disability – 3rd December 2020

Thursday 3 December is the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). Introduced in 1992, the IDPD aims to promote the rights and well-being of disabled people across society. This year’s theme is ‘Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World’. We hope you’re able to take part.

We want to celebrate the great work done by Your Consortium partners  – and so we asked Fran Rodgers from Purple Patch Arts to share information about their plans for their day.

Since 2009, Purple Patch Arts has existed to improve the lives and life chances of people with learning disabilities, complex needs and autism by providing innovative, inclusive, creative learning experiences for them and the professionals who support them.

Zoom disco to celebrate International Day of Disabled People hoped to be the biggest yet!

Purple Patch Arts are hosting a Zoom disco on Thursday 3rd December from 7pm until 8.30pm, in celebration of this year’s International Day of Disabled People. The evening will be filled with feel-good music with fancy dress, disco lights and glitter all encouraged! In a time of social isolation, Purple Patch Arts’ Zoom discos give participants the opportunity to connect and have a joyful evening dancing together. Purple Patch Arts work with people with learning disabilities, autism and complex needs, and the disco is open to anybody who identifies as disabled with family and friends all welcome too. Purple Patch Arts have hosted several Zoom discos since COVID-19 restrictions have been in place and are hoping this will be their biggest yet!

To further mark the International Day of Disabled People, Purple Patch Arts have released a video for disco participants to learn a dance to Kool & The Gang’s ‘Celebration’. The dance routine is led by Tricia Arthur-Stubbs, one of Purple Patch Arts’ Programme Artists, who teaches fun disco-style moves and has a surprise in store with her costume change! The video also features some Purple Patch Arts participants who have been accessing the organisation’s creative education opportunities over Zoom since March.

Purple Patch Arts would love for this Zoom disco to be their biggest yet – anybody who would like to join in for an evening of ‘Celebration’ should get in touch with the Team Purple at, or call 07725 041801!

There is also a Facebook event with all of the information about the disco, which can be found here:
